Types of clouds -- compute cloud (e.g., Amazon web services), storage cloud, backup and recovery cloud, application platform cloud (e.g., Heroku), application software cloud (e.g., Salesforce.com , Workday), social cloud (e.g., Facebook), e-mail cloud (Gmail)

Private cloud uses the Internet to deliver applications, services and data, but the organization manages the hardware, network, storage, operating systems and hypervisor on its own. This provides greater control over the environment and makes upgrades and changes more straightforward than with an external cloud. However, a private cloud requires greater IT investment, talent, maturity and expertise, including an understanding of virtualization and provisioning of resources across physical and virtual machines.

Public cloud connects to external computing resources operated by a third party provider. The advantages of this approach are that it’s possible to configure and provision quickly and that it eliminates the burden of patches, updates and system management. The downside is that an external provider may not offer the same level of customization and control that an internal cloud does.
